- •• CONNECTIX SHIPS ON THE ROAD FOR POWERBOOKS ••
- Printing, faxing and network connections simplified for PowerBook travelers
-
- SAN MATEO, Calif., USA, October 1, 1993 –– Connectix Corporation is now
- shipping On The Road, a critically-acclaimed utility for traveling users of
- Macintosh PowerBooks. On The Road offers deferred printing, faxing, and
- automatic network setup to provide PowerBook users seamless integration with
- any office environment. On The Road carries a US suggested retail price of $99
- and is available now through leading resellers worldwide. Registered users of
- CPU-Connectix PowerBook Utilities may contact Connectix at (800) 950–5880 to
- acquire On The Road for $29.95.
-
- On The Road provides a comprehensive solution to the unique problems faced by
- PowerBook users when they are “on the road.” On The Road defers printing and
- faxing while the traveler is away from the office and simplifies network
- connection upon arrival. It automatically configures PowerBooks to use
- available network resources. Whenever users reconnect to familiar networks, On
- The Road automatically prints to a user's preferred printer and remounts the
- appropriate server volumes.
-
- On The Road also works with a variety of fax modems to defer sending of faxes
- until a phone line is available. On The Road functions synergistically with the
- best-selling PowerBook utilities package, CPU- Connectix PowerBook Utilities,
- to provide a comprehensive PowerBook power and connectivity solution.
-
- On The Road was originally developed by Palomar Software, a leading
- manufacturer of personal computing printer driver and system software products.
- “We felt that it was important to focus on our core printing business,
- particularly with QuickDraw GX due next year,” said Joel West, president of
- Palomar Software. “When we evaluated all alternatives, we felt that On The Road
- and its customers would be best served by Connectix, the clear leader in
- PowerBook utilities.” Current users of On The Road will be supported by
- Connectix through their toll-free support hot line (800) 950–5880 and can
- purchase CPU-Connectix PowerBook Utilities for $29.95.
-
- “On The Road enables traveling PowerBook users to prepare documents and faxes
- just like they do at the office. When they arrive at any familiar facility, On
- The Road recognizes the location, automatically prints and faxes, and instantly
- configures all network services according to the set-up used on their last
- visit. It’s the complete solution for anyone who takes their PowerBook on the
- road. We are very pleased to add this to our growing line of portable
- computing products,” explained Roy McDonald, President and CEO of Connectix.
-
- On The Road is available now worldwide through retail outlets, mail order firms
- and distributors. Registered users of Connectix PowerBook Utilities and other
- Connectix products can purchase the product for $29.95 by contacting Connectix

-
- The main strength of the PowerBook is also one of its problems: You can work
- almost anywhere, without being plugged into anything. So what happens when you
- want to print or fax something? You can make yourself a to-do list and print or
- fax the items later. You can even use background printing to spoll print files
- to disk until you're near a printer - but then you still have to check that
- to-do list. Or you can use Palomar's On The Road to automate the process.
-
- With On The Road's deferred printing and faxing, you work as if you were
- connected to a printer and a phone line; that is, you choose your Print or Fax
- command when your document is ready. But instead of a Print or Send button in
- the dialog box, you get a Defer button. Clicking onm it spools the document to
- disk for On The Road to handle later.
-
- Anytime your PowerBook starts up or wakes up, On The Road does its best to find
- out where you are. It Looks at the network connections, printer names, mounter
- AppleShare volumes, and external monitors - plus it uses previous information
- and experience. If the right printer is available, it prints the spooled
- documents; if a phone line's attached, it faxes the waiting items. If On The
- ROad can't figure out where you are, it asks you. You can store as many named
- locations as you want - "At home," "At work," "Dialed up to work," and so on -
- where each location corresponds to a distinct set of connected devices.
-
- When you spool your print documents, On The Road looks for the printer you've
- specified in the Chooser. You can defer printing to your office printer, one at
- home, and one at the client's office, and the correct documents get printed at
- each location. You can also force a spooled document to print to a current
- printer at any time as long as it uses the same printer driver as the one you
- sent it to originally.
-
- On The Road stays in your menu bar, signalling its actions(ascertaining a
- location, looking for a phone line, and checking for a printer) by changing its
- icon. Its menu lets you turn deffered printing and faxing on and off and lets
- you set AppleTalk to load at startup. As a bonus, it turns AppleTalk on and off
- automatically, based on your network connection.
-
- In all, On The Road takes a simple idea and turns it into an elegant handy
- utility for PowerBook users. (Version 1.1)
